Week 3 Discussion Question

Annemarie discovers that her aunt who died, Great-aunt Birte, isn't a real person. She knows her Uncle Henrik and Mama are lying to her. Why would her mother and uncle lie to her? What do you think the funeral really is? Who do you think the people were arriving at the funeral if it wasn't real?

Make sure to answer the question with a RAD response and use details from the text to support your thinking. Please check your grammar, spelling, capitalization, and conventions before submitting your response. Type it in your blogging doc first so you can go back and edit your work if necessary.

  1. Her Mother and Uncle lied to her because they don’t think that Annemerie will tell anyone what is going on, but if somehow whatever secret they’re keeping gets out, they could get severe punishments or a death sentence. So by making up a name, they can hide anything needed.

I think that the funeral might be Lise’s or it could be just to hide something that they need and have a talk about Ellen’s parents or something about the Nazi soldiers. I think this could be true because if they really told them something that was true if someone overheard them then they could or would do something with that information and that would not lead to a happy ending.

I think that no one will show up to the funeral at all because it’s probably not a real funeral and it’s a talk that the family is going to have about Ellen.

    1. Nice job Lindi! Well thought out.
Could Kirsti also be a reason they lied to Annemarie?
I think that it is not going to be Lise's funeral because she died so long ago.
      Good job overall!

  2. Annemarie’s Mom and Uncle would lie to her because they want her to think that uncle Henrik has a wife that loves them and wants to meet them. I think the funeral is actually a plan to ship Ellan to Sudan and make sure she's safe. People are coming because they might be part of the resistance and they are going to help Ellan.

    1. I think you are on to something Sarah! Do you think some of the people coming to the fake funeral will be others trying to escape the Nazis, or just people to help Ellen?

  3. I think Annemarie’s uncle and mother would lie to her because, it’s an old tradition to carry the dead person in a coffin and drop it in the sea, they’re going to put Ellen in the coffin and pretend she’s dead and pretend to carry her out to the sea, but I think they’re really going to take her to Sweden. And though I can’t think of what the funeral really is, but I think the people coming are going to be Peter and others from the Danish resistance to help take Ellen to Sweden.

    1. Nice answer! I wonder if you can site any evidence in the text that brought you to this prediction. Do you think any one else is going to head to Sweden with Ellen?

  4. Annemarie’s mother and Uncle Henrik would lie to Annemarie because they didn’t want the soldiers, who potentially could be spying, to hear them. This is the same as when they were back at the apartment and Papa asked Uncle Henrik, “Is the weather good for fishing?” If soldiers heard them talking, they wouldn’t have a clue that Ellen and the Johansens were going to Sweden. I think that, if anyone found out that the Johansen’s and Ellen were going to Sweden, then their plan would be ruined. They also lied to Annemarie because if Kirsti heard, then she might get scared or tell anyone in sight. So far, the book has proved that this could happen. Kirsti is very little, so she might get frightened. The text also mentions, Kirsti loves to talk, like when she was on the train and almost told the soldiers Ellen is Jewish.
I think the “funeral” is really lots of people coming to Uncle Henrik’s house. Since I know that there are lots of fishermen that also own boats, then everyone in the family could be evacuating to Sweden. The other fishermen’s boats could be taking all the people who show up for the “funeral” to Sweden. I think, this would be smart because more Jewish people or people who wanted to get away from the war, could go.
I think the people who arrive for the “funeral” might be Ellen’s family members and Annemarie’s family. I also think it might be Peter who is coming. It would make sense that Annemarie’s family comes, so that they can stay at the farm, while Uncle Henrik takes Jewish people to Sweden. Other fishermen might be leaving too, so the other family members would stay in place of Uncle Henrik’s friends. Peter will play a part in this underground railroad to help the Jews escape the Nazis. I think he will be the leader. With Peter’s help, I think that the Johansens will be able to help all the Jewish people, including Ellen, and her family get to Sweden.

  5. I think that they are lying to Annemarie because they might be sending Ellen to another country so that she can hide from the Nazis. I think that the funeral is for the resistance meeting so they could have a plan. I think that the resistance showed up because it might have been a plan meeting so that they could discuss the plan or a plan or come up with one.

    1. @Abby:
Great thinking, bu why would her mother lie to her instead of just tell her the truth, why can't she know?

    2. I agree Abby, but how will they get Ellen to another country?
