  1. The fairy tale that Annemarie chose to remember and think about while on her way Uncle Henrik’s boat was Little Red Riding-Hood. Annemarie choose this fairy tale to think about because Little Riding-Hood was doing what Annemarie was doing. To start, Little Red Riding-Hood and Annemarie were both walking through the woods. They were scared and trying to be careful. For example, Annemarie was trying to make sure no one saw her and Little Red Riding-Hood was scared of wolves in the woods. Next, the girls were both going to help someone. Annemarie wanted to help her Uncle and the Rosens and Little Red Riding-Hood wanted to help her Grandma. Both girls were doing this to be helpful to someone they cared about. Last, both girls got caught and had to be brave. Annemarie got caught by soldiers. She had to pretend that she was a little girl. Little Red Riding-Hood also had to be brave because she was stopped by a wolf! I think that Annemarie relates a lot to the Little Red Riding-Hood story.

    1. Sophie,
When Annemarie was stopped by the soldiers on the path to Uncle Henrik's boat, she remembered her mother's advice to "act like a silly little girl." How did that advice help Annemarie in this situation? Also, Annemarie didn't know the contents of the important package she was delivering. Do you think she would have felt safer knowing the contents, since it was "only" a handkerchief, or was it better for her to not know the contents?

    2. The advice to "act like a silly girl" helped Annemarie because the soldiers didn't get suspicious. If Annemarie was serious and showed she was scared the soldiers would have found the packet. I think it was good Annemarie did not know what was in the because because she would have protected it more if she knew how important it was. If Annemarie did know that the packet had "only" a handkerchief in it she would have opened it to see what was really inside. This could ruin the whole mission.

  2. The fairy tail Annemarie remembered was “Little Red Riding Hood”. She chose this story because she often told Kristi this story with lots of fun, detail, and exaggeration. It relates to what's happening in the story because Annemarie is hearing and feeling the same things in the morning just like the story. For example when she thought of the wolf howling she heard something in the trees. I know all this because it was all in the book.

    1. Sarah,
After her experience in the woods, how do you think Annemarie may change her telling of the fairy tale in the future when she entertains Kirsti with stories? Do you think there is an important parallel between LIttle Red Riding-Hood finally making it to her grandmother's cottage and Annemarie almost making it safely to the end of the path without encountering danger. "Annemarie stopped... There was a turn immediately ahead. Beyond it, she knew, as soon as she rounded the turn, she would see the landscape open to the sea." When I read that passage, I felt relieved that Annemarie was safe! Were you surprised, as I was, by the last paragraph in the chapter when she saw the soldiers and dogs ahead?

  3. The fairy tale that Annemarie remembered one the trail was Little Riding Hood. You could tell that was the story because name was Little Red Riding Hood, and the story was the same, a little girl takes a basket of bread to her Grandmother’s house and encounters a wolf.

I think Annemarie chose this story to remind her that it’s all fake and no big bad wolf or soldier is going to stop her. She’s doing it because she’s in danger of this happening to her so it’s good for her to tell the fairy tale to herself to calm her down.

This relates to what is happening in the story because Annemarie is going through a walk in the woods and taking her uncle a basket of bread and cheese and an apple just like in the story. The girl takes her Grandmother a basket of bread and goes through the path in the woods. And she encounters a wolf when she strays from the path. Like Annemarie but she doesn’t stray from the path and instead the wolf comes to her.

    1. Lindi,
I agree that Annemarie was remembering the tale to reassure herself. Which character do you think was more brave, Little Red Riding-Hood or Annemarie? I think both characters were clever to escape danger. How did Little Red Riding-Hood outwit the wolf on the trail, and how did Annemarie behave to have the soldiers leave, so she could get to Uncle Henrik?

  4. The fairy tale Annemarie chose was Little Red Riding Hood. You could tell that was the story because name was Little Red Riding Hood, because she said it was about a girl who had a red hood and went to bring food to her grandmother. I think she chose this story because she wanted to remind her self to be brave, like little red riding hood had to be when the wolf stopped her. It relates to the story because she's bringing food to her uncle, and something (or in this case, someone.) might stop her.

  5. Maddie,
In Number the Stars, several characters have demonstrated tremendous courage. You can probably think of many other characters from all the many other books you've read that also have the character traits of bravery, compassion, and resilience. Annemarie used the example of Little Red Riding-Hood's bravery to help herself get through a scary and dangerous situation. Have you thought about how frightening it would have been to be Annemarie? Do you think you would have identified with LIttle Red Riding-Hood, too, or would you choose another strong girl character from another book to boost your feelings of bravery, if you had the challenge of taking the important item to Uncle Henrik's boat? What character's bravery would you have used as an example for yourself, if you had been Annemarie?
